Whenever I read something that someone has written and it's full of typos and grammatical errors, I find myself doubting that person's intelligence. I know writing skill isn't always a good indicator of how smart a person is but I can't help it. Maybe it's because I'm just an overally critical person, I don't know. I try not to let my thoughts override the message the person is trying to send but it doesn't always work. Does it bother other people as much as it bothers me?

I am exactly the same way and always end up criticizing myself for being critical just as much as I do the writer for being so, so, so ....

careless, ignorant, uneducated, illiterate ??!

Years ago, I started a long distance relationship with an anesthesiologist which I was thrilled about. Yet, his first letter brought with it great disappointment. I suddenly found myself doubting whether he even had a degree based upon his lack of ability to put thoughts on paper properly.

Well, yes, he truly was a brilliant doctor and throughout our relationship, he came to look upon me to handle any of his written correspondence. It brought balance to our relationship and removed the intimidation I had originally felt concerning his degree - he was just a person and not entirely a superior human being.

It all boils down to our individual aptitudes and the importance we place upon grammar, spelling and wording.

Written communication can be such a beautiful means of expression, which you and I obviously value greatly. However, for others it is simply a hurried and mundane required task.

This is okay as long as we learn to recognize and appreciate the various gifts that others bring to our table.

Yes, sometimes. It IS distracting. I think a knowledge of the language of your country -- which inevitably includes spelling and grammar -- is important. And fast typing, or being in a hurry, isn't necessarily an excuse for not doing things the right way. Having said that, there are a myriad of reasons that people don't do these things (spelling & grammar, etc.) the right way. Sometimes it's our lax educational system, and that's just sad. You talk about doubting the person's intelligence. I think bettering ourselves is important, and if you have access to the Information Superhighway, you have access to all that you need to become better and more learned about the things that really matter. BUT that's different in everyone's eyes. I can read & write, form sentences, etc. But I fall short in other areas that just come naturally to some people. And I really, REALLY envy those people who, although they can't spell (etc.) as well as I can, excel in those areas that I fall behind in. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.

I do the same thing too! I especially can't stand it when I'm looking for Mr. Right on a dating site, and he's spelled everything wrong! Hello Mr. Wrong! I'll never get married at this rate. I can't read beyond the third "gross" error. It's unfathomable that a professional adult would not be able to hit the spell check button. Good luck and go easy on the good people who are not from this country!

lol, it depends. Because many people write what is called slang and at times, spell words differently to be creative, and they can actually spell as well, so I don't get bothered. I can tell the difference though in the way people write, meaning how they would actually talk if face to face them. And some people make spelling errors because they type fast, like I have. But trust, I'm very well spoken when I get the words out, and with typing.

Yes, I feel the same way. If a person cannot write grammatically and cannot spell, I discount what he has to say. This is an obvious problem in his educational background, and therefore, I am skeptical of his opinion.

It bothers me also, because of my upbringing but to tell you the truth, some of the youngsters like to make short cuts and I can understand that, since they don't want to write it all out, but for us more mature ones, the older ones is the one that really annoy me, they are not kids and therefore should not act that way....but let it go, it's tough to change some people's way.

well, other than the fact that I can point out at least 5 spots where you missed commas. I think your being a little tough on people. Because really, all you should be worrying about is how many points you get at the end of the week.

it bothers me as well, but you can't just doubt the person's intelligence...
I noticed that typing on-line is an excuse to many to misspell a lot of words and have many mistakes.. o well!
