My dad died of cancer when i was 18. I'm 27 now and let me tell you, it sucks cause he was never there when I needed his advice. You have to tell him something like this, "DAD! I need you in my life. And if you keep on smoking, you're killing yourself and that's very selfish because I will always need your advice. I need you to be alive dad!"
If he doesn't get it, then maybe talk to your mom. Or simply let him be and be stronger as a result. If your father truly cares for you, he will stop and he will take care of himself to be there for you.

Ask him. The problem is, if he is not ready to quit and stay quit, he will not. He has to be the one that makes that decision. A lot of people resent having people (even loved ones) telling them what to do, so don't tell him to quit, ask him to. Be sincere, but not over dramatic. I wouldn't leave articles on cancer or emphysema out, and I wouldn't hide his cigars and leave gum in their place; that will likely just irritate him. Have a calm discussion about it, tell him that you will help him and support him. Pledge to go on an evening walk with him after dinner, instead of his cigar. Best of luck. The best thing I ever did for myself and family was to quit smoking.

Only your dad can help himself. I have the same problem with my husband. My son is like you, he's afraid his dad will die or have a heart attack from smoking.

there really isnt a way to make him stop. you can express your concern to him, and tell him how you feel. but i am sure that your dad is well aware of the health risks of smoking. i am a smoker, and i can tell you this one thing: we know that its unhealthy, but its hard to quit. when a person is addicted to smoking, no matter what the health risks are, if they arent ready to quit, and dont want to quit, and if they enjoy smoking...nothing you say or do is going to make them change.

He will quit after he will get sick. Trust me.
You can't do anything for him whatsoever.
Been there, done that.
He has to make his mind himself. Nobody can do it for him.
He needs an impulse. A strong one. Like someone very close to him dies on lung cancer. He MIGHT then realize how dangerous it is.
People believe that they are immortal until they get hurt.

Would you go and ask SUV or Hummers' drivers to stop immediately using their cars, because their gas fumes cause cancer or heart attacks around? And that's just a tiny example of how inconsequential this world of ours is.

Smoking is an addiction and an enjoyment. You can't get him to stop, he has to do that for himself. However, you can talk to him and tell him that you love him and are concerned about his health.
