Yes. It is his house. If you don't like it, look else where.

Yes. It's legal. A landlord can refuse to rent to anyone for any reason unless the the reason is illegal--like he won't rent to you because of your race.

Depends if this property is his. Is it in the same house he lives in. He could very well get away with it. However you should check with your Landlord and Tenannts Act in your town or city. They can usually spell out the rules and regulations. You may not want to drag this on anyway even if they say he is wrong. He obviously will find ways to make life miserable for you. I would find something else if this is what comes out of it.

Absolutely he can deny you the right to rent. Unless he is receiving money from the federal government for things like Section 8 housing. Then he may be setting himself up for trouble.

technically a landlord has the right to rent to whomever he choses. there arent a lot of laws regarding this because it is his property. granted, if he said no because of race or sexual orientation then you might have a good argument. he may be christian or catholic and just believe it shouldnt be allowed for unwed people to live in his house together. either way, you dont have much of an argument.

Actually No, that would be discrimination on the grounds of bias to marital status. He can come up with another reason, but your marital status isn't acceptable. I would ask for his reason in writing and that is your proof. Contact a local Housing Commission in your area and request information regarding discrimination to renters. You may also get information and help by contactin HUD. I would also suggest contacting Legal Aid, just for some free advice from a qualified attorney.

He can do anything he wants, it's his property.
In our system of law only what is prohibited is against the law, everything else is perfectly legal. There is no law that prohibits a landlord from discriminating based on marital status, or amount of pets.

He should have been smart enough to disguise his reason. He could have given any excuse as to not renting to you. If he actually said he wouldn't rent because of your marital stautus I would sue him for being judgmental. (and I'm not sue happy, but this REALLY irritated me!)Teach him a lesson.
Maybe this is a blessing. You don't want to rent from such a judgmental prude anyways.

He can't refuse to rent to you if you are a minority, based on religion or sexual orientation, or handicapped. But other than that he or she can rent to whomever they wish. So if you are a white, boy-girl, protestant, healthy couple, you may have no legal recourse. But please speak with an attorney to make sure. Good luck to you.

the landlord can rent his property to whom ever he wishes, and will not even have to give you a reason. He will let it out to who ever he thinks is suitable from his point of view, not yours.
