yes to both . they love being handled if you do it often and are gentle, and they recognize who you are fairly quickly. they are a great snake to have in your collection.
I had a female ball for years, I did snake demos with her at my old HS, and she was the greatest. I had let 4 year olds handle her with no trouble. she behaved so well.
unfortunately for me she was also getting fairly advanced in years, and our recent move proved to be too much for her to adjust to after being in the same cage for so many years.
enjoy your snake, and learn from it. they are such great animals.

no, they do not recognize you in the sense that a dog or cat would, they see you as provider of food, and nothing else.
if you just got the ball python I suggest you do a little research on them.
You should have their cage set up before hand, a underbed rubbermaid works the best, as they aren't the greatest of climbers and a fall could really hurt them.
hot side needs to be about 90-95 degrees...
to do this you need
a heat pad (pet store)
digital thermometer w/probe (wal-mart)
lamp dimmer (wal-mart)
hook it all up, put the heat pad under one side/corner of the cage, and turn the lamp dimmer down some...
take the digi thermom and put the probe on the inside of the cage, under the substrate, over the heat pad so you know exactly how hot it's getting....
once the cage is set up and you have your new snake, leave him alone with minimal disturbances for atleast 2wks before attempting to feed him....(meaning only get into the cage to give fresh water and clean it if necessary).
once he has ate once, wait for him to eat no less than 2 more times (so about 3wks if he eats the first time) before starting to handle, once you start to handle him, limit it to about 5 min a day, and slowly increase.
NEVER handle the snake after eating, always wait atleast 2days before handling.

I've had 2 ball pythons. They don't mind being handled as long as you handle them everyday. You will know that your Ball trusts you when it allows you to touch it's head. I am not sure if it likes being pet, but mine certainly enjoyed my holding them and letting them crawl on me. My first Ball always enjoyed burrowing in my hair when I held him- he'd crawl up the back of my neck and crawl through my hair from underneath.
Ball Pythons do grow to recognize you when you're the one handling them and feeding them all the time. My snake used to smell me coming in and come out of his little rock that he sleeps in so I could either take him out for a couple of hours, or feed him. He knew my scent. I don't know if they know faces, but they sure do know scents. If other people went into the room he didn't come out of the rock.
I love my Ball Pythons!!
