"Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here", "The Wall", anything ring a bell?

They're a classic Rock band, pioneers of Psychedelic Rock. Their first works from "Pipers at the Gates of Dawn" featured then-lead singer and guitar Syd Barrett who just recently passed away.

When Syd left the band they acquired David Gilmour, the singer/guitarist they've used ever since Syd's departure from the band. They've done many tribute songs to Syd even while he was still alive including the 9 part "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" set found on their 1975 album "Wish You Were Here" (Syd actually was present at the recordings for that, he came unannounced and watched the band play the song dedicated to him).

Their more recent sets like Live 8 and their "Division Bell" tour (also made into their most famous DVD "P*U*L*S*E") have attracted countless numbers of people, hundreds of thousands packed Hyde Park in London to see the original cast of Pink Floyd (minus Syd obviously, there had been lots of hot water brewing between Dave and Roger after the '94-'95 tour) play an approximately 25 minute set, in which they performed old songs like "Breathe/Breathe(Reprise)", "Money", "Comfortably Numb", "Sorrow" and some others.

Recent talks of a Pink Floyd reunion (mainly as a tribute to Syd) have been flying around but nothing has come as of yet. But if the chance for tickets for a reunion show come up make sure the purchase immediately when they go on sale, the show WILL sell out in a matter of hours, if not hours then it will be in minutes.

It is probably the most well known psychedelic bands ever that originally came on the scene in the late 60s with Syd Barrett with The Piper at the Gates of Dawn then released a plethora of hit albums in the 70s after Barrett wasn't able to fulfill his singing role.

If you are asking about what the names means, it is a combination of two blues musicians' names, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. This was because they started off more as a R&B influenced rock band before they experimented with the sound that would make them famous.

Pink Floyd are the most successful progressive rock band of all time. They released The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, and it stayed in the Billboard Top 200 for over 700 weeks.

Their biggest single was Another Brick in the Wall (Part II).

When Syd Barrett joined the band (it was originally called Sigma6), he renamed it to Pink Floyd after two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
Cheers!

An English rock band started in the mid-1960's as a run of the mill Beatles look alike and became a psychedelic concept album icon in the 1970's with albums like "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Meddle". Their big finale as he original band was "The Wall" in 1980.
