I've spoken to people from India, and they've told me that saying India is impoverished is like saying that the United States is impoverished: there are poor areas and wealthy areas.

From what I know of India, a lot of the problem is the water; I went out with a guy who visited a very wealthy area of India, and there wasn't water available at night. I can't imagine that, living in the United States as I do and being able to take a long hot shower in the middle of the night if I want to.

The largest portion of poor people in India live in rural areas; however, as far as I've seen, the poorest people in the United States live in big cities. Wherever you go, the biggest reason for poverty is illiteracy - not being able to read well.

Another reason that people are poor, I think (this is an opinion) is that a lot of very rich people don't share their wealth. Some rich people are very generous, but most of the sharing - food banks, volunteering time, and events like bike-a-thons where money is raised - are done by the middle class.

Indrajeet, you asked a very important question. Being able to read won't keep you from poverty, but it will help - and it will also open your mind to the questions that will help you to make a difference in the world. Good going!!

India's population is largely in poverty because the country's government neglects the rural areas and concentrates investment and development on the large cities where growth (due to foreign investment) has been sky-rocketing. The country receives the vast majority of money from these urban centres, so there is little impetus to invest in rural communities, and improving their living conditions. That's a very basic explanation.

Have you seen the family of Kalaam in Rameshwaram? You won't believe that they are also poor which he never disclosed. The problem of India is, over-population with 1.2 billion people and more than 700 million people do not have any access to clean water (mostly contaminated water) and toilets. Is it possible to provide these daily necessities?.They spend their life in searching for these things.

Just imagine, your home is packed with 25 people and you do not have water. How can you sleep and go to the school?. After few days can anybody use your toilets?. This is just tip of an iceberg.

We got independence in 1947. India's population earlier concentrated rurally and was illiterate. Slowly and steadily, both sides - shifting from rural to urban and illiteracy to literacy - picked up and the business and industry flourished, poverty is reducing. We will see - almost everybody - the facilities we now have, were not having earlier, it means we have progressed enough. We can reduce the %age of poverty and cannot totally eradicate it. To my point of view, India has travelled enough from bad to good days.

India never got freedom. In 1946 power passed from British crown to Feudal land lords. The leaders of free India continued the exploitation of the people.
All benefits of freedom accrued to only the class called public servants who are really public parasites feeding on public. So public is poor and will continue to be poor untill we stop all priveledges to any group particularly public servants.

Poverty comes from too many kids in the family, beyond what the parents can support. I think the corruption comes from those parents trying desperately to make a living.

Although most people disagree with me, I have found that religion is the root of most corruption. People do the most rotten things to other people in the name of religion. Did you know that the countries with the least religious influence, are the most prosperous, have the best health care,, lowest infant mortality rate and that religious societies have the most problems in this area?

It is true that the most secular countries--those with the highest proportion of atheists and agnostics--are among the most stable, peaceful, free, wealthy, and healthy societies.

About 80% of Scandanavian countries claim to be athiests and yet their economy is the strongest in the world, crime rate, health care, education, gender equality are all positive compared to countries that are highly superstitious. Also consider the quality of life and low crime rate of the rather pagan Japan, France, Korea and Germany all of who claim a 50% or higher of people who don't believe in God....Fifty Percent of the people in those prosperous, high quality of life countries are ATHIESTS!

Religion clearly isn't good for a country's economy or crime rate.

The U.S. is an exception but the U.S. is, of all developed countries, the lowest in health care, lowest in quality education and highest in crime rate. The U.S. days are numbered as a prosperous nation due to the superstition and lack of respect for reason that abounds there.

India is steeped in superstition and a religion that justifies being bad to one another...(the Karma thinking). People will kill themselves and others in order to prove that their set of superstitions are better than another's. Religion is all about misplaced power.

When the power of LOVE overcomes the love of POWER, the world will know peace.

since you know India is in poverty, why find a solution to it yourself instead asking questions, the solution i meant when put into practise can eradicate poverty at least in your area.about corruption, people like you and me are the reason,we dint like the usu all way(law full one) which takes time,so we give bribes to people to achieve our needs speedily on time, everyday some where in India or around world such things happen,it can be prevented by us "people" by self awareness and using law full means to meet our demands.so my dear child you must help future India and Indians the way you could to make the nation poverty free and to be free from corruption.

India is poor ...because of accumulation of wealth among the few. Rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer.

Corruption starts from politicians.
