There is no absolutely proven scientific answer to that question.

There are many theories to which Africa seems to be the source of the original outbreak most believed.

Moreover, there are conspiracy theories that say:

1) the CIA accidentally let a biologic warfare experiment get out of control.
2) the KGB (Soviet spy agency) accidentally did it.

Some religeous fanatics believe it is caused by God's will to punish homosexuals because when HIV first broke out it infected almost exclusively within the gay community.

Other theoriest belive that AIDS/HIV has been around for thousands of years and the virus simply began mutating much like various flu virus do.

There are 2 speculations about AIDS that I know of when it was becoming widespread. One is that it started from Africa. Some said that the disease came from apes and Africans got it by having sexual intercourse with them. Well, another speculation is that it came from a lab in Singapore and it was some kind of an experimental disease. Well, the thing is that we should act as humans if we are humans. Not like animals or beasts.

I haven't kept up with current research on the subject but a few years ago it was thought that AIDS crossed over from other primates to humans through consumption of what the researchers called "bush meat". Bush meat is monkeys and apes slaughtered and consumed by humans. And yes, it was thought to have originally infected humans in Africa.

there was a really good movie a few years ago that pinpointed how the aids epidemic spread. i remember something about africans doing bad things with monkeys. but then somehow this gay male flight attendant who got around the world a lot and was some sort of a "PLAYER" did a lot on his part to spread aids around. not sure what the movie was called. it was sort of a docu-drama -- not sure if accurate. if anyone knows -- please post the info

Yes, it started Africa, in Cameroon or the Congo.

Most of world`s opinion about AIDS is that it started in africa because of the monkey population(the only other creatures that have a similiar infection)But,the other day in my class we had a discussion about aids and someone found somewhere on the internet an interesting supposition: in the monkeys the sickness doesn`t show up like a very noticeble infections(like humans) but it had differences...this lead to the idea that aids was created in laboratories in america! So it didn`t really came from monkeys( like one answer said we had to screw the monkeys to get it) but they took it from them and rimodelated the structure and aids came out like we know it today(this is all hypothetical of course)
Sorry for my english i know it`s not the best.

I think it is impossible to figure out where it first started. Certain strains have even been detected in chimps.

aids started when this man went to africa and ate a infected monkey. monkeys have their own kind of hiv but its called something else and when a person eats it their body turns it into hiv.
