I have a avocado plant I started from the seed. It has grown in only water and is 2 feet tall with a great root system. I have a large hurricane vase with 3 guppies and was hoping to put my plant in there to give em' an oxygen source. good idea or not? thanks

You do not put any fish in a vase with a plant on top of it, including goldfish and bettas. It is not an "oxygen" source. It's an oxygen blocker. Whoever's stupid marketing idea that was should've been shot. That whole setup was designed for an artsy cutesy look instead of for the best environment for the fish. With the exception of poisoning, any fish can live for a week or more. Actually, it's more like slowly dying. Anyway, first, all fish need more room than a vase provides. Bettas don't need an aeration system, but all other fish do, including goldfish. All fish, with the exception of goldfish, need water heated to a temperature of about 80 degrees. Water in a vase is, on the average, about 65 degrees. Please think about getting your fish a 10 gallon aquarium with a heater and an aeration system. Thanks!

Unless your vase holds at least three gallons of water (personally, I would go with at least 5 gallons) and has an aeration system, I wouldn't keep your guppies in there to begin with. A week with no problems is hardly any indication that your guppies will live a full, happy life in there.

As far as introducing an avocado plant, I wouldn't recommend that either. First of all, the plant would not act as an oxygen source unless the leaves were under water (and even then it wouldn't be a very sufficient source of oxygen like an airstone would). Secondly, the plant probably wouldn't be able to survive in the slightly brackish water that guppies need (you HAVE been treating their water with a generous helping of aquarium salt, right?), and also, avocado plants are not aquatic plants. Although they start out in a cup of water, they eventually need to be replanted in soil. It is very likely that the the plant would rot and foul up your guppies' water.

If you really want to keep plants with your guppies, try aquatic plants that are meant to be totally submerged in water. My personal favorite is java fern or java moss because it's very low maintenence, and you don't have to plant it in the gravel to grow it.

My recommendation is to keep your avocado and your guppies separate. It is best for the livelihood of both of them.

I don't know for SURE if it would harm either of them. But I feel certain I wouldn't risk "just trying it". Check with the people at PetSmart and ask if it would hurt the fish. Ask if they would nibble at the roots.....that could harm the plant. I would definitely do some thorough investigation before I did it.

Goldfish and Beta's are the only fish I would recommend for putting in with rooted plants.
I agree that Guppies need more air in their water than is provided by any plant.

Guppies should be in a tank with a filter and heater not a vase.
