Yes. You only drain the battery if you leave it on once started. Some aircraft use a battery back-up for when they are ticking over, to ensure the engine picks up and doesn't stop but it is not necassary on a car as the motor runs hotter anyway. Compare the size of the cooling fins on the heads. Once that plug is red hot, it stays that way by means of the combustion occuring in the cylinder.

yes the tips of those get very hot and deteriate so the less time you use them the better.
