Britis Bulldogs what a game imagine this americanos.
1 boy stood behind a line the last man standing, his task. To cross to the other end of a concrete and often broken glass covered playground filled with possibly 50+ other guys whos one task is to put him down by any means possible.
No pads no helmets no ball. Just blood and guts.
Grid Iron bah bunch of fairies more like.
"Footbal" FOOT BALL kinda suggests the general idea is to use your foot with the ball don't you think?
the other sports are girls games too.
Baseball = Rounders a traditonal dutch and danish game for gitls.
Basketball = Netball a traditonal british game for girls.
To be honest though i've seen some hardcore girls play Bulldogs and kick some butt man.

Well, the Inventors of Football Americaine were undoubtedly of British derivation and probably did in fact base the game on a combintion of British Bulldog and rugby. However, being Americans, they could not leave the game with its obvious European socialist structures - so, being good market capitalists they tweeked the game so that it could not be formally played with the necessity of purchasing a who team's worth of gear (not just uniforms). Think about the number of industries involved in outfitting just one team (composite plastic manufacturers, plastic molders, leather goods, dental protheses, jock cream makers, spandex underwear makers, equipment designers, etc.). This is a thoroughly American reinterpretation of your sport.
This is one reason why soccer, too inexpensive to really be worthwhile for Americans (until recently), takes the staus of the red-haired stepchild in the u.S.
Basketball actually defies this theory, in that it really only takes a good pair of shoes, someone with a ball, and a court.

God knows! Until we can get a Yank with a modicum of intelligence to give us the answer to this question, it will remain one of the world's great mysteries. As far as I can see, there is very little use of the foot required: it looks more like a game of organised physical thuggery in crash helmets to me. I bet they are not quite so brave when you take their padding off. And Beckham thinks he's going to make proper football into a majority sport over there! Hahahaha, don't make me laugh!

Because calling it 'Rugby for sissy's who don't want to mess their faces up' would be just too painful for them!
Considering that they pick it up, they shouldn't call it foot ball. Because they gave our game a stupid name 'Soccer', we should return the favour and think of a totally unrelated name for their game.
How about : smegger ('s' for silly shorts, 'm' for Micheal Jackson, 'egg' the shape of the ball and 'er' like the tv show.
Hey, at least it means more than soccer right?

The same reason the English, tree dwelling, knuckle dragging, colonizing, man-monkeys call a smoke a f.a.g. and a poke a shag
(BTW-I had to put periods in f.a.g. because yahoo censored it-shows you the REST of the world knows what it means)

Each culture has it's own ways. You could compare much more than just "football". I think we just accept things for what they are in a given country. It's not our job to change people's ways.

who cares why? call your game what you want and let us call ours what we want. i don't understand why people from other countries get so hung up on american vs. non-american "football". it's our country, you're entitled to your beliefs but i don't think that's an invitation to change our culture just like a it's a "yanks" invitation to change yours if we lived outside the states.
