I have a 2004 GMC seirra Z71 package. What is the difference between this truck and a regular truck without the Z71?

No, its the same alt, but don't forget about the locking diff, larger tires and urethane jounce bumpers also.

Z71 is the build code for GM's off road package.
The major differences are skid plates below the transmission and transfer case, heaver shocks and springs and pre-wiring for trailer lighting and a trailer hitch. I think that the Z71 also has a higher amp alternator, but not absolutely sure on that one.
