I will add some details: do you really think that the incentives work well in a capitalist world where Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton are so much richer than St Teresa of Calcuta had?

And how much money do you think that we need to just keep people fed and healthy in a world where millions and millions are spend in cosmetics, food that make us fatter or food that is just thrown away?

UK is the country in Europe with the highest inequality rate. Now that I read you, I know why, in my way back home, I come accross an average 5-6 homeless people every day.

The Welfare State is not the problem but the solution when run appropriaty and according to the principle of subsidiarity. Look at the four most prosperous countries of the wordl: Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, they all have estensive universal welfare states.

yes something needs to be done to stop poverty. everyone gives the excuse that its all about hard work, bla bla bla, and thats not the case in this country. this country gives jobs to their friends and families not to the jobless. most people that have a good job got it because they came from a rich family that could afford to put them through college or had the ability to simply give them the job. impoverished people struggle from the starting line to even survive and it has gotten worse and worse.

How much is a basic income and how would you propose to pay these people that wont work?

Are you going to supply them with an income?

Yes I do think that capitalism works. Victoria Beckaham earned her wealth, Paris Hilton received her wealth from family that worked for it. Nothing criminal about that. The incentives are still the same, you will get paid for giving what people want. The better you do it the more you get.

It is not a moral obligation for me to give the money I have earned to others. So if I so wish to purchase cosmetics, etc I will.

I'm not proud of my homeless. Studies have proven that these panhandlers make about $13 an hour, tax free and then they go down and get other social benefits. They have no desire to work, The money is spent on alcohol tobacco and drugs. My local minimum wage is is $7.80. Why should I be proud that we have homeless. I'm proud that I keep myself from living like that.

You cannot always comparisons of different locations and claim that one process will work for both. The most socialist area in the states suffer some of the highest impoverished citizens. Those that are not as liberal have fewer problems. Sweden also alows its citizens to own fully automatic weapons and they have very little crime. Would that work in the US? It all revolves around a different culture.

It would be nice.. but in today's society I would not support it. There has to be motive for people to dedicate themselves to their jobs and often just plain love of the work won't cut it. Money is their incentive. If we did a basic income for everyone though, college, graduate and professional schools should be free to attend as long as you promise to dedicate yourself to a career that your education supports. Stay at home mom's should also have an income... it's sad that some mom's have to put their babies in day care if they don't want to. Then day care should be free too.

NO! Why should a doctor who goes through years and years of schooling to learn how to improve and even save lives make the same amount of money my ex husband makes while he sits around 24/7 drinking beer and using drugs? You want to turn our country into the USSR?

NO!!!!!!!!. Every one should get what they work for and we do have a basic income its called welfare. If you support a country where everyone gets paid the same regardless, you should move yourself to Cuba or China. I am sure they would love to have you. NO NO better yet If you want I will buy you a one way ticket to North Korea. They all get a basic income. Have a nice day.

Where would be the incentive to study, to invent, to produce, Going to the Supermarket would be like going to the DMV or other government offices trying to get something done

i support a basic income, its called you earn what you make, and you get what you work for. I think what needs to be done is an overhaul and basic gutting of the welfare system, which is the biggest cause of poverty around.

no...what about your lazy nephew ..or the cousin thats on drugs and wont quit partying..??? our nation was founded on an anglo protestant work ethic...thats what it needs to be gotten back to....in basic, what you are suggesting is "income , or wealth redistibution" ..which is socialism....whatever happened to inventiveness, hard work, thriftness and the idea of saving for a rainy day.....this is basically the worst thing that could happen to our country...
