Crabbe and Goyle never talk in the books. All they do is "snigger stupidly."

I believe you're right. I also don't recall their fathers saying anything when Voldemort confronted them in the cemetery in The Goblet of Fire. Guess stupidity runs in the family.

I think they only "snigger stupidly" because that's their role. They're the stupid thugs that protect Malfoy since he'd get killed if he was never surrounded by Crabbe and Goyle as his lackeys. They're the sidekicks, they're not supposed to be as smart as Malfoy (in the sense of only speaking of course, because many things he says are stupid).

Hehe. Yes, but that;s because they're inferior to Draco Malfoy and he would shut them up if he did say something and they have to snigger stupidly at his insults at Harry and Ron. They can't really laugh smartly because they're not very bright people. As Draco's sidekicks, all they have to do for their part in the book is follow him, respect him, and never anoy him and be the good little sidekicks they're meant to be.

Actually they do speak to Malfoy once in the Chamber of Secrets, so they probably do speak a few times in the books, but in general, they are not intelligent enough to think, they just do whatever Malfoy tells them to do, without thinking of anything, oh yeah and they speak when Harry is throwing snowballs at them, in Prisoner of Askaban.

probably because J.K. Rowling can't think of anything intelligent for them to say.......it's just the way Crabbe and Goyle are supposed to be thought of..stupid and ignorant, not intelligent :)

They are meant to provide comic relief as well as show the nature of Malfoy, notice he doesn't seem to have any "real" friends? He just has followers who can't think for themselves. Even Pansy Parkinson follows Malfoy.

That's all that lackeys are good for, anyways. No sense in wasting good dialogue on them in the books - save that for Harry.

Thats their role in the book. They're really stupid, but they're a lot bigger than Malfoy so they can protect him.
