... when I haven't sent them? They are being returned as spam. It looks like someone is using my domain name but not the first part! Have I got somekind of virus within my email account? luckily my webmail catches it as I have an anti-spam filter so not all of the messages get into my in-box. Advice/help please? I have uptodate macafee anti-virus software installed.

No nobody has hacked your PC, but somebody is using your smtp and giving your email address as return address. There are 2 settings for email the one use to send is called smtp and the one used to get emails is called POP. These are usually something like mail.domainname.com. People can send emails using your smtp server, they do not need a password, spammers usually use other peoples smtp for covering their tracks and avoid using their own bandwith, currently it is very common, I have clients calling me about it everyday.

There are two principal causes.

1. Some spammer has adopted your e-mail address as a spoofed "From" address. If the recipient's e-mail system is improperly configured, you will get the NDR (non-delivery report). Properly configured mail servers will NDR during the SMTP handshake so the NDR goes to the sending server. If they NDR after receipt (many SPAM blocking systems do this, but it is an incorrect configuration) then you'll get the NDR.

2. A spammer is sending out fake NDR messages that contain the spam. This is a popular way around some weaker SPAM blocking systems

There's really nothing that you can do about either one. Just delete the SPAM and move on. Your computer is not infected with anything as long as you keep your anti-virus up to date.

Someone is spoofing your e-mail address, by modifying the e-mail headers so that it appears as if the e-mail was sent from your mailbox. You may want to check for virus worms and spam bots installed on your computer. Mcafee is not a very effective anti-virus package and you need some anti-spyware protection as well. You might also want to look at some firewall software.
