It's too bad that many Americans dislike soccer. They did not grow up with it, and think it is boring. A really good soccer game may end up with very low scores, unlike American football, basketball or baseball. Americans want results, which for them translates into high scores. They don't understand the finer points of the game and the amazing athleticism.
It is not a Eurocentric sport, since just about every other country in the world plays it and enjoys it. The US is the only country that doesn't. There is hope, though, as more and more children play soccer in the US and begin to understand the underlying strategies and skills.
Many people in other countries find American football a big yawn. Who wants to watch a bunch of big guys jump each other between long commercials? Just joking.

I don't think it's really a question of "hate" as it is that most Americans don't understand it and tend to dismiss it out of ignorance. They're used to their own brand of football and USA football fans being the way they are can't admit that something else might be as good or even better. It's a form of tunnel vision.
With regards to American football, don't other countries ask the same question about some of our more notable players that they're not familiar with? I think the media in any country will naturally devote its time and attention to its players and sports with maybe an occasional mention of another country if it's noteworthy in some way--drug scandals, etc.
Some people are just threatened by what they don't know. They tend to overdo the "macho" bit to avoid showing their ignorance.
From what I've been reading the last couple years, soccer is actually on the rise in popularity here in the States.

It is just not american I guess, We do love our Football, Basketball, Hockey, and Baseball though. I have to agree that I do not care about Soccer, even if it was the only game on, I would watch something else. Who knows maybe someday it will catch on, and I don't know who david beckham is either. I am guessing he plays soccer. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I don't think we hate it; we are just indifferent to it.
I disagree about it being slow and boring -- but it does require an appreciation of effort rather than achievement that Americans are not used to exercising. We expect to see big scores, and almost everyone likes a home-run fest as opposed to a pitchers' duel. Almost all soccer games are more like pitchers' duels, which require a greater appreciation of the subtleties and difficulty of the game.
I do think children's soccer leagues will gradually change the American perspective. As we grow more knowledgeable or the game, it will gain popularity. Give it time to build a history here.

I think many American's don't appreciate soccer because it's a low scoring game. Americans tend to enjoy sports that offer alot of points scored, like football and basketball. This is also the reason the designated hitter was created in the American League in baseball.

Why do you think American's hate soccer? Just about every kid I know has played soccer at some point in his/her life including my own two kids. I personally like soccer. The AYSO (American Youth Soccer Association) is HUGE in Utah. The term soccer-mom is so used here its scary. Every single weekend in the spring and summer, every single park and school yard is overrun with kids running after a little ball. We're not as fanatical about it as other countries but I guess that's just because we're so fanatitical about our other sports which caught on in the US before soccer did.

I spoke to an American friend and his point after hearing about the FIFA finals was " what is the whole point of the game, you play play play and the score is a draw, so you basically shoot 5 penalties and the lucky one wins???"....I believe his other point was that Americans tend to like scores in the games!! 0-0 didn't really sound exciting enough
