From what I have heard on this, the computer adjusts the timing, spark, fuel injectors, and temporarily shuts them down when there is not a demand for full power from the engine. It's kind of like the other four cylinders are just moving up and down in the block but are not producing power until they are activated. That is the best way that I could imagine this is accomplished. I hope it helps give you a start to the answer.

How it works is a solenoid controlled by the pcm is turned on to bleed off oil to the valve lifters for that cyl that is disabled.it only activates after the vehicle has reached a certain speed and load conditions are right.

when the ecm knows there is a eng problem like over heating it will shut 4 cyl down and thoese 4 cyl will act like an air pump to help cool the eng so there is know eng damage a nother answer to this question is that each coil fires 2 times on one piston it is really hard to explain in writing but if you have any questions e mail me at svt330ci@yahoo.com because its like 4 pages of info to tell u how it works but it is about the balance of the motor and when it fires
