If you have no income there's no need to file a tax return. Your parents are correct, and your b/f is clueless.

You probably will need copies of your parents tax returns for your FAFSA though. Total family income and resources are considered up through age 26 or 27.

You don't need to fill it out unless you made more than the standard deduction, which I think is around $7500. If you haven't had a job then you definatly don't need to fill one out unless you had a lot of money acquired from savings, etc.

If you have had a job at any point in the past year and have paid taxes, you can fill it out and see if you will get a rebate (which most likely you will).

If your filing status is single, then you must a return if your gross income was at least $8,450. Gross income means all income you received in the form of money, goods, property, and services that is not exempt from tax, including and income from sources outside the United States (even if you can exclude part or all of it).

your parents are correct. don't fill out the form. Did you have a job at all last year but are not working now? if yes, then fill out the form if you worked at any point in the year.

If you have earned any money at all than you need to fill out and file a tax return. Do you have a savings account? Is it in your name? Does it accrue interest? If you answered yes to any of those questions, file a tax return.

if you earned any cash (brought home a paycheck) or have investments, or get certain government benefits, you may need too. if you still live at home and get an allowance, don't bother.
