OK, i recently got concert tickets, unfortunately the concert is a few weeks from now and starts at 8. I work the late shift, from 1-9. Where i work, they would need to find a replacement for me on that day...and we dont have an on-call staff so it would have to be set up weeks in advance which is why i would feel bad calling in sick the day of the concert. I want to come up with a good excuse as to why i cant make it to work that day, something i can tell my boss a few weeks in advance, some sort of commitment i cant get out of. Any suggestions?

You could try and find a replacement for you. Maybe trade shifts with someone else as a favor to each other. If you already know your schedule in advance, and give enough notice, you shouldn't have as many problems as trying to switch at the last minute.
Or you could tell your boss an unexpected family obligation has come up, or you have a medical appointment on that day.

My experience level is probably a lot different than your, so maybe this is bad advice. But honesty goes a long way. If you lie and he knows it, that will just piss him off.
My action in this scenario would be to tell the truth, tell your boss, you won't be at work that day. Period.
You give him enough advance notice to fill your shift.
If he doesn't help you out, go get another job right after the concert.
It is apparent you don't have a very healthy working environment anyway.

You can always call in sick a day or two before. Or tell them somebody in your family is getting married and you have to fly out of the state or something.

BUT~

Talk about unethical. You'd rather waste money than make money? How are you gonna so-called climb the ladder w/ that attitude?

Then again, to each his own.

Why not see if you can trade shits with someone so that you can be free that night to go to the concert.

Just tell them you have developed a case of "Anal Glaucoma". If they ask you what that is, then tell them it is something embarrassing you'd rather not talk about.

However, if you want to really know what it is, well it's:

"I can't see my a** coming to work today"

LOL!!!

"I need -A- day off a few weeks down the road" is sufficient.
