first off. a fish will not just get as big as their tank. the keep growing ( to the person that suggested the plecos) Pleco's or corydoras might help if it is uneaten food. You didnt say what kind of fish you have.

never ever use soap. It will kill your fish Use can use diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and make sure you rinse it out good. A salt solution also works. Dissolve as much salt as you can in boiling water. let it cool and then scruba away and rinse well

Try a gravel vacuum. You can get bettery operated ones, ones that connect directly to your sink (good for large aquariums) and manual ones.

Are you using a filter? you need one.

Get some CYCLE. It is good bacteria in a bottle. It will help break down any waste. You cannot over dose your fish with this so for the first time put in a half a big bottle to get things going and then be sure to add more weekly according to dorections

Go to your fish store and get you two or three pacosamuses!!! There those sucking fish that will get as big as the tank, but they clean the tank for you!! I probably spelled it wrong, because its been years since I've even said the word let alone spelled it !!! But they have these huge suction-cup mouths that do nothing but suck up all of your tank's Gunk!!! Good-Luck, to you!!!

they have a gadget at the store to vacuum out the aquarium, it siphons out the dirt and slime in your aquarium. This " cloudy stuff" on the floor of your aquarium indicates it needs cleaning anyway, and that will clean your gravel also.

Get a gravel vacuum and try that. I would also add a few bottom feeders.

Try using baking soda -- just be sure you rinse it all good. Baking soda I don't think is toxic. You might need to change out your gravel.
