I've got a Dell OptiPlex GX50 Desktop, and I cleared the Hard Drive on it 1 time, and the software and drivers for the sound card are gone. Now everything that is coming from the Internet (sound related) sounds like a chipmunk. I asked my computer what to do (troubleshooting) and it said to go in to the computer and take it out and plug it into the expansion slot. It didn't give me any pictures, so I don't know what to do. I can get into the computer easy, but I don't know what it looks like. I saw something that I guessed was a sound card, but it turns out it isn't. The computer told me to plug it into the expansion slot and turn the computer back on and it's Plug 'n' Play features should automatically detect the new device and automatically install it. The drivers should be on there somewhere, right?

Would you also recommend a USB sound card?

are you sure you dont have onboard (built in) sound, and not an actual CARD?

go into device manager find the sound card/device and remove it, then reboot, see if the system finds it

if that fails, this is the site for your dell model drivers and updates

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=PLX_PNT_CEL_GX50&os=WW1&osl=EN

It's likely your sound card is built into the motherboard, so you can't remove it and reinstall it.

Go to support.dell.com. Click on Drivers and Downloads. Put in the Service Tag number of your computer (It should be on the back or side somewhere) and find the Sound Device, or Sound Card drivers.

Download them. Follow the instructions and install them.

Since you formatted your drive and reinstalled windows, you may have other out of date drivers. You might want to update other ones while you're in there.

Ok, well first you need to unplug the power completely from your system. Second, you need to open it up and look for the sound card. You may also not even have a sound card, and it might be built into your motherboard. A sound card is easily found by looking at where you plug in your speakers, then follow that line to the card. If you do have one, it will look somewhat like this http://tinyurl.com/y8qakj
Now just unplug it and plug it into another slot.

Before you do this, I recommend you go into your 'Control Panel', go to 'System', go to the 'Hardware' tab, and go to 'Device Manager'... Then open the tab that says 'Sounds, video and game controllers' and you will see your sound card listed there. Double click on that and see if you can update the driver under the 'Driver' tab. If you can't, uninstall the driver and on next reboot it will be reinstalled.

Most computers don't come with sound cards anymore, unless you pay extra for a nice one. They generally just have a built in sound card on your motherboard. I would go to dell support and drivers, look up your computer model #, and it should have all the drivers you need there.

be sure your new sound card is nicely matched such as your equipment. evaluate getting help from an electronics or pc restoration save. in case you purchase your card at Staples they're going to deploy it for you for a cost.
