Key words: Opportunity and Freedom
America has always welcomed people - that was how America was formed in the first place....
America has always been associated with all kinds of freedom and the government seens to have few hassles giving refuge to foreigners in trouble - so many people try to flee to the US
America also represents cultural and economic freedom, freedom of speech and expression...people seeking to live a life with fewer restrictions get tempted.....
Finally the opportunities that the US offers in terms of jobs to talented / skilled people as well as in terms of educational opportunities and opportunities for research....
1. It's easier to get a scholarship in the US than it is in any other place,
2.The quality of higher education is comparitively good and
3. The infrastructure for both students and people working is good....
4. The educational programmes offer more flexibility as well and
5. In many cases it is easier to gain admission into educational institutions in a course of your choice than it is in many developing overpopulated countries
Many of those who study in the US get jobs there and visas too...others who chose to go back to their own homes do so but all don't.....
As for work, if one is qualified and skilled, it is not all that hard to get a job (a university bachelors and masters degrees are almost a norm in developing countries whereas they're not so common in America) - and the jobs pay well....
If one gets a decent job, the housing in the US is cheaper in many areas.... and large and comfortable houses are available most of the time (in comparison to those in developing countries)
Finally, it's not just the Americans who have "the American Dream" - people all over the world do....
This is the pull factor

The families that I know (many, many of my students) that have immigrated to the United States (emigrated is improper in your sentence), have come for opportunity, education, and freedom. Those are the same reasons that drew immigrants to the U.S. over 100 years ago.

Money could be better, life is cheaper in certain states, shopping is better, a much wider variety of people live there, life seems to be more exciting there, they appear to be more accepting of differences in people
