The vagina will look fairly normal until crowning, when the baby's head engages with the labia and pushes forward. The vagina expands to accomodate the baby's head and stretches, so it looks like a turtleneck pulling over the baby's head and face. The baby may have hair, and s/he will be wet and possibly bloody. Once the baby's head is out, the doctor or midwife may suction the nose and mouth with a bulb syringe. The baby might move his/her mouth as if to cry, but since it can't yet take a breath there won't be any sound coming from him/her. With another push, one shoulder should come out, followed by the rest of the body. There can be a gush of blood and amniotic fluid as the baby comes out that was trapped behind his/her body in the womb. The cord will still be attached inside the womb to the placenta, and the doctor or midwife will usually clamp and cut it, and then help deliver the placenta, which is red, a little bloody, and squishy. After that, if the woman has torn during the delivery, she will receive stitches in her perineum. You probably won't be paying much attention past the delivery of the baby, as most people simply watch this part and focus on the newborn instead of the rest of the delivery.

I think of it as a beautiful thing, never gross..i think immature adults should not be looking but mature adults...U will see the vagina opening up where the babys head is going to sit..they will probably twist and turn and pull on the babys head to help it ease out..they will pop the shoulders out and the babys full head, the babys head will be sitting outside of the vagina while the mouth gets sucked out, then next thing u know the whole body slides out easily..it will be amazing for u and mean a lot to her for u being there with her..The placenta will be born after that but u dont need to watch that if u dont want to, most people dont because its not a pretty sight..your eyes will be locked on the baby most of the time. Keep in mind though that some women have bowel movements and urinate during the pushing so be prepared just in case..otherwise i say g,u will enjoy it.

My husband reacts with fainting and nausea to the sight of blood, so with our first child he didn't watch much of the baby coming out, instead he positioned himself to look at me (which was great since no one else was really paying attention to my face). With our second child, he actually caught the baby.

There is a little bit of bloody mucus (from the cervix stretching), lots of water. Rarely a baby will scratch the mom and cause some blood during the birth.

The head stretches and opens the labia. It actually takes much longer than you would think unless she is an experienced mom (and even then can take a while). But the head just looks like a round object (you don't see the face until the head is out), then usually with the next contraction the baby and a whole bunch of water comes out.

If you are concerned about feeling queasy, you might want to avoid watching the placenta which will come with blood.

Good Luck.

It looks a little freaky actually.... like your starring at this person's vagina... and then all of a sudden you see it opening and closing and opening and closing and then you see a dark thing start to come out and go back in then out and then back in, then a whole face pops out!!!!! and it's like sitting there with this head and face popped out of it, then a baby pops out of that and it's like WHOAH! There was a baby in there! And that's it :) Unless you watch the placenta be born after, that's kinda grose. All in all it's a great experience, us women don't get the chance to watch from that angle most times hehe.
