in my own country its usually my race. and overseas its usually my nationality. the whole system is screwed i believe that people should not be categorized by their race we are all humans and this divides people even more i think that nationality is more important!!!!

Knowing your nationality can help you learn a lot about yourself. but people don't just parade around reciting their family history, it's something a little more special than that. America is such a melting pot that even if you said you were american it's notenough for people, it's little more than a location. While being American might signify national pride or freedom, nobody is purely American, so when that question comes up people go into their nationality.

By me being an african-american it still does not help me, for blacks it is hard to trace our roots. Some of us will never know our background. But i would prefer to be called black simple as that, because i am not from Africa I am just an american.

I don't...I think it is important for people to know about there family background though. It underscores America as a melting pot of all people.
