Make sure you have an open 5.25" bay on your computer where you can install your DVD drive. Decide if you want to only watch movies or you want to watch movies and copy them as well. Recently, the price of a DVD drive which writes and read costs about the same as one which only can play DVD's. There are several online computer buying sites, my favorite is www.newegg.com. I bought 2 DVD burners from them, a NEC for $33.00 and a Lite-On $29.00 both with free shipping. The drive usually comes with a free media player software program (e.g. Cyberlink's PowerDVD). By the way, Windows Media Player can also play DVD movies - though it is not as feature rich as PowerDVD.

Go to Wal-mart and get a Lite-On 16X DVD+-RW internal drive. It will come with instructions, Nero-OEM burning software, a changeable faceplate (from black to beige) mounting screws and a USB sound connection cable. These are the most versatile optical drives you can get. It will burn both CDs and DVDs as well as play them. Cost about $45-$50. Internet retailers are a bit cheaper for the same drive. Windows Media Player 11 WILL play DVDs.

If you buy a DVD-Rom, yes, you'll be able to watch movies. It will probably come with some basic software to watch movies in, or, you can use Microsoft Media Player.
Do you know how to install a DVD-Rom?

Most DVD burners/players for your computer come with all the necessary software and programs you need. There are usually better ones out there, but they cost money. What you get in the box should be enough to get you up and running

You will also have to have the proper video codecs installed too. Most will come with a new dvd drive. Be sure to check all specs. on your computer to see if the meet the drive requirements.
