I found some RAM online that I want to purchase but I don't know if it's compatible with my computer. I know for a fact that my computer takes PC133 SDRAM 168-pin. Now is that all I need to know to make the purchase or is there still the possibility that it might not work?

The memory in question is IBM PC133 reg ECC SDRAM 33L3151 (and my computer is an IBM NetVista M41 6792-xxx). I hope I provided enough info! I'm in desparate need of RAM and I can't find the answer anywhere! :-o Thanks in advance for any help!

It should work. While there's always the possibility of RAM not working for bizzare reasons (like a Samsung PC133 chip working where a Micron PC133 won't, even though the specs are identical) it's usually due to being the wrong type entirely- PC2700 instead of PC2100 or PC133 instead of PC100.

Then of course you have the extreme cases where it doesn't even fit- getting DDR when you needed Rambus or DDR2 etc. Unfortunately, all you can do is check the specs carefully, and hope. If I remember correctly, the Netvista series accept single RAM chips, so you don't have worry about buying in pairs.

You can usually even mix ECC and non-ECC memory on the same motherboard, just not in the same bank. While ECC is generally intended for servers, it runs a bit slower- so demand for that type of RAM is less (hence lower prices)

Or... you could buy something like this (searching Ebay specifically for Netvista M41 memory)

Be very careful, EEC RAM is normally just for servers and workstations. I just did a little google and there's nothing to suggest your system would be able to take that particular module, go for the same stick of RAM but non-EEC
