My roomate talks, yells, laughs, sings and whimpers in his sleep ALL night long.

I don't talk to him too much about it cause its embarrasing to him, but what causes such constant behavior like this in a person?

Some of the things I hear him talk about make me wonder what's gone on in his life.

Is there anything I can do to help him?

There's not much you can do to help him. Sleep talking may be stress induced or it may have a possible genetic component as well.

I once had a roommate who would scream, carry conversations at a regular daytime volume of voice, and laugh in his sleep.

I had to just tell it to him straight. I was living there too, and it was affecting my sleep and it was rare that I would get an uninterrupted night of sleep. Thankfully he was receptive to trying out some solutions to help him sleep better.

There is no simple cure for sleep talking. Some of the things we tried were earplugs (I tried both silicone and foam to no effect), melatonin (a sleep hormone), warm milk, no caffeine before bed, chamomile tea, Tylenol PM, and none of them worked.

He was a nice and considerate guy to try all those remedies, but what ended up happening is that I moved out because I wasn't getting any sleep. There was no hard feelings because sleep talking is not something your roommate does on purpose, they just can't help their subconscious.

I don't know what makes a person talk in thier sleep. But my sister and I share a room and very often she tells me that i talk in my sleep. But she tells me that sometimes she can't understand me. Maybe we people such as I and your room mate have so much to say that we talk in our sleep. Maybe we have so many opinions but we never really speak them and we state our opinions in our sleep. I don't know what causes sleep talk. And I myself would like to know. This probably did not help you but it was an interesting question.

My husband and two of our children talk in their sleep when they are really tired. I bet if he took some NyQuil or got some extra sleep it would stop. Who knows, but it's worth try.

Put a tape recorder in his room and then let him listen to the tape.
