Well the way my crew would normally approach this is to get an external hard drive with enough memory to back up all of your information. Hook up the hard drive. Go to documents and setting and find your name under the users list. Copy down the favorites, desktop and documents folders. This will be most of your information. Then you will restore you windows to where you want it to be. Once this is done hook the hard drive back up and copy the files into the folders you originally took them out of.
Note: this will not back up programs you might have had those will have to be reinstalled when you done.
If you need to back up a Outlook PST let me know and I will explain that, it is a little more in depth process.

there is no software that can give you complete guarantee that nothing will be lost or erased, so, the best way is to make a backup copy of all what matters to you, then using the windows setup CD, run setup then choose the upgrade option, this should only overwrite windows files, your other files should stay intact, but anyway, some programs may requier re-installing. I repeat : there is no guarantee that nothing will be lost, Make a backup.
