The lap top is an HP Pavilion 550mhz amdk6-2 and the old hd was a 4 gig. I bought a 40 gig and it won't recognize until the windows instalation CD is in the drive and started booting. The new hd is a toshiba. Can anyone help?

im sorry, but really think you should invest in a newer laptop. one the bigger the drive the more yer cpu has to work. and the more you put in it, the slower it will become. think you have to change the bios, maybe someone else can advise.

Did you check your manual to make sure you could upgrade to that hard drive? It might be incompatible with that computer.

Your laptop will not support that large of a drive.
