At 10 years old, Elvis Presley's mother Gladys couldn't afford the bicycle he wanted for Xmas that year (1946), so bought a guitar for him at the Tupelo Hardware store for $12.95. The bicycle came the next year. Elvis was self-taught and the rest is history.
Cheers!

My dad, Amos Massengill lived next door to the Presley's in the mid 40's. He was an excellent guitarist and taught Elvis the only 3 chords that he would know for the rest of his life. They were all dirt poor and Elvis with his parents thought the world of him.

Untrue. Wow. Big Mama Thornton taught Elvis Presley to play guitar. This was revealed shortly after he made the famous statement, "The only thing a ****ger can do for me is shine my shoes and buy my records." Someone also thought that teaching him guitar was one of the unmentioned things that one could do for him too.

Elvis taught himself to play the guitar. He would sit down with his guitar and listen to the Grand Ole Opry and artist like Hank Williams on the radio and taught himself.

Elvis was a dynamite performer, but most of the guitar licks you heard were Scotty Moore's. He was Elvis' guitar player for most of his career.
