That's a great question. "Freedom" in this sense is more regarded as a metaphor.
The United States is by far, the most conservavtive democracy in the world. However, it is changing....slowly.
Laws regulate a civil society. However, many laws have been established that are unconsitutional, un-democratic, and un-American occurances have taken place throughout history, and continue to do so even at the present time.
Take for example the banning of gay marriage. Many argue that this is religious ceremony that should only take place between a "man" and a "woman" However, anti-gay adovcates fail to recognize that the institution of marriage has changed and evolved through history and at one time only those who were wealthy could marry those who were wealthy, and those who were poor, could only marry those who were poor. Marrige has changed face throughout the generations, and even faced a constiutional ammendment in the early 20th century where Senator Strom Thurmon, a known racist, announced a proposed ban on interracial marriage.
Taking away gay and lesbian rights in unconstitutional, but people vote to take away these rights without blinking an eye because that's the nature of the country. Don't forget this country was founded on hate, discrimination, and persecution regardless of ones religious affiliation. Atheists and Agnostics are also bigots, racists, anti-semites, and homophobic - let us not forget that.
Another arguement with regard to the gay community is when gays are unable to adopt children in certain cities, yet, they still pay an education tax. Is this fair? No way.
Are gays free? No. America takes away their rights, and yet they are still forced to pay taxes by law. So in a sense, laws are un-fair, and un-just. That's why rebellion and revolutions happen.

ACLU has alot to do with it. It's an orgnanization that thrives on defending people who want ot go way out, like with gay marriages and such. No, we are not free, despite what you may think. The founders of our country intended it to be a strong nation, strong being both in the physical side as well as the emotional side.
Gay marriages, abortions, divorce...none of it was part of the founding on the nation. I have some suggestions of books you could read that are really great and explain alot of what our country WAS founded on:
A Thomas Jefferson Education, The Presidents and several others which I could name for you if you would like. Personally, I see our country as immorally declining. We are not strong emotionally, and that is something we need to be aware of. it is something that builds up a country. I think one reason our country is so full of spoiled kids, lazy adults and wrong-minded people is because this generation has not gone through any hard times like grandparents and great grandparents.
We really need to pray for this country.

In order to understand what civil rights and freedoms are,
in America, you are going to have to know something about
world history, and how civility came about.
Our society dates as far back as the Greek city-states concept
of central government, even before Spartacus rebelled against
Rome.
The premise of co-existing peacably between communities,
townships, cities, states and nations is part of what civil rights stand for.
This set of laws governing civil rights can be taken too far, as we
have all seen what some of the frivolous civil rights defenses
has put on display by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
Now lets make this clear, there are two sets or kinds of law
the USA embraces, one set is the laws of God, mostly used by
Church canons, and by all denominational churches.
And then there is the laws of Man,(society, civil, criminal)
With which, at the core of these laws is what we call Constitutional Law, or what provisions the US Constitution
covers, in terms of US citizen civil rights protection, thats why
the first ten amendments formerly the Bill of Rights spells out
the type of protection each of our law-abiding citizens can expect,
if needed in a court of law, to defend themselves, for example.
When arrested, you have the right to make a telephone call,
you have a right to be legally represented in a court of law,
(right to legal counsel)
Here is part of how Miranda(Miranda v. Arizona, 1966)
reads:
"You have the right to remain silent. If you choose to give up that right, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to
have an attorney present during any questioning.
If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you at
government expense."
This Miranda case was a landmark case, and brought about,
more realistic protection for all those who find themselves as a suspect with any law enforcement agency.
And Miranda brought about further defense protection while
going through the "due process of law"
Our system of laws, the criminal justice system is not perfect, far
from it, but it does provide over 66&2/3rds protection legally, from
those who would do us harm, in any form.
That includes terrorists, rapists, murderers, hostage takers,
child-molesters and kidnappers, wife and women beaters, etc.
Over in the United Kingdom, all persons arrested are guilty until
proven innocent.
In America. its innocent until proven guilty, see the difference?
When the Puritans came over on the Mayflower to establish
a colony in the new world, they sought religious persecution from the Church of England, and yes, there were some debtors in the mix as well, but my point is, they wanted to establish a world to
live in where they were not compelled or forced to pay exhorbitant
taxes, and be able to attend the church of their choice, and raise their families, grow their crops, reap the harvests, watch the sun go down in a rocking chair, all done at their leisure, there was no
feudal lord or crown forcing them to go out and share-crop the field, or accuse them of heresy, because they believed in the wrong church.
If we didn't have laws, there would be anarchy and chaos running rampant through out all the city and county streets in the United States.
We would be fearful of leaving our homes for fear someone would mug or kill us for our earthly possessions, (there wouldn't
be any police force to stem the tide of crime)
Many of our young daughters would be raped by barbarians who
travel around to see who they can pick on and destroy.
Much more child molestation would be going on (there is enough of that already)
If you get punched in the face, punch them back, harder, and make it count, just be sure there are no witnesses around to testify against you, so the testimony becomes he said, he said.
(hear-say)
If there are witnesses, wait until a more opportune time, and then
get payback, (I'm still a good Christian, but I have't lost my common sense.)
As far as being a" control freakish country" I would reflect on that a moment longer, as there have been millions of our people who have done good things for all foreigners, served in the Peace Corps, being 1st responders to aid other nations when hit with natural disasters(floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados)
Paid other nations billions of dollars in foreign aid, shipped millions of tons of corn and wheat to starving nations, the list goes on and on.
The point is, you will have to start looking beyond your nose,
when it comes to criticizing and judging the nation you live in, as it has given you the ability to pick and choose, where to live, what to eat, what to wear, how and where to educate yourself,
occupation/career choices, entertainment galore, come and go as you please, the list is endless.(opportunities abound)
What other foreign country offers so many rights and privileges?
There isn't any, America is the best, and the last best hope for the future of peace and mankind, even with the stigma of Islam staring us in the face.
Think of all the many sacrifices that were made by all our men and women in uniform, who went before us, they did what they had to do, and gave the last full measure of their souls, the least
we can do is to continue what they started, and preserve protect and defend the best nation on earth, the United States of America.
Amen.
Thats my message, good luck
