Please tell me the mechanism that virtual circute switches might use so that if one switch losses all its state regarding connection, then a sender of packets along a path through that switch is informed of the failure.

In general, the answer is the signaling protocols. When a VC is created, the signaling protocols are used to set up state in each switch along the path. The routing protocols are used to figure out the path, but the signaling protocols are used to set it up. The signaling protocols are also the ones that discover that a switch has failed and that then inform the rest of the network that the VCs passing through the switch have failed.
