If you want a natural birth you need to prepare yourself mentally and physically. There are simple exercises you can do to strengthen your body, and classes you should take to know how labor affects your body and your baby. If you choose to have a hospital birth, most will have epidurals available if you decide to get one.
Epidurals do change your labor and will have an effect on your baby during labor. You may notice a change in your temperature and your blood pressure. Your labor may slow down, which may cause your doctor to start you on Pitocen, which will also cause changes in your labor and affect the baby.
Epidurals and Pitocen can hinder breastfeeding.
Since you won't be able to feel much while pushing and won't be able to move much, you will have to depend on others to help you position during labor, urinate, and push your baby out. You may need a forceps or vacuum delivery depending on the strength of the epidural. Sometimes, due to the effects of the epidural on the mother and baby, a Cesarean birth can result.
Epidurals don't always work in the way a mother will expect. Some only take on one side, or are not strong enough for the labor. Some doctors cannot make it to the labor room in time to administer the epidural. If it wears off, the endorphins that normally would assist as natural pain relief in the mother's body will not have built up enough to ease the pain during the transition phase of labor, which is usually the most difficult.

I'm also contemplating which route to go (I'm 27 weeks along now.) For the most part, the side effects of the epideral will be problems with you, not the baby. I've heard many of women who have had issues with their back after having an epidural. If given too late and it is too strong, I've heard that some women can't feel themselves push (this happened to a friend of mine.) But at the same time, the pain can be a little too much and without the assistance of medicine, you might be too wiped out for the actual delivery. The epidural will help you to relax and even sleep, not because it causes sleepiness but because you won't be in as much pain. You really need to store up your energy for the actual delivery and this will help you some. So you really have to weigh your options and decide which is best for you. My thought is that I am going to sign the epidural form but try to do it naturally till I can't handle it anymore. My husband has been saying though for years that I'm going to have drugs (nice huh.)

U still have a long way to go before really deciding but I have 2 kids, first which I had a very little amount of epidural and felt almost everything the whole way through and the second had a full epidural..I must say the decision for the full epidural was the best thing i did during my labor and delivery. I didnt feel a THING..I didnt even know when i was having contractions, they had to tell me because i couldnt feel them...I felt wonderful and happy..If u dont like pain go for the epidural,it doesnt hurt at all when u get it done..some people say it does but its only a pinch and im not good with pain, the medicine works very fast and the rest of the hours during labor will go by sooo smoothly for you...labor and delivery is very painful,im just being honest...otherwise if u think u will be fine dont get one but i recommend it. good luck..

When I went into labour with my daughter I was all about going natural. But 2 days later when she still hadn't come they gave me an epidural and broke my water. She was born about an hour later. After she was born I was more alert and aware than I was before they gave me the epidural. I am due on the 19th with my second child, and if there is time then I will have a epidural. I have done research on the epidural and there is nothing any were that says that it is not safe. But if you still are unsure talk with your doctor, he/she will not do something that isn't safe for you or your child. It is ultimately your choice, and you can say yes and then change your mind, good luck and take care.

Keep the epidural option open but tell you OB you want to try it first without out. Labor progresses and most women tolerate the early stages of labor just fine. I have never had the epidural...but I also had labors under 8 hours. I have heard that women who have long labors can get so exhausted that their labor stalls and sometimes having hte epidural actually helps them progress.
There is no shame in having pain relief...but if natural feels right to you...then look into techniques like water birth - hypnobirthing - using a doula that help support natural births. If you get into labor and find that you are just not handling it well...then ask for the epidural.

I had a natural birth, but it's really up to you. Everyone woman is different and deals with the pain differently. Although, having a natural birth is safer for you and the baby. When I was in labor, I wasn't really in too much pain so I never opted for epidural. If you want to go natural you have to put your mind to it. If you're pretty good at dealing with the pain level then you'll be alright.

natural birth. with the epidural it was more of a problem just to get it. the shot it the back hurt and I started shaking very badly from the pain because you have to be curled up in a ball in labor so they can find a good spot on your back to shoot you. You can't feel anything- not even when to push. you miss the whole experience.

Epidural. I find the pain of childbirth unbearable. Plus, you are still small and may have more trouble than a woman who is older your first time. The epidural does not effect the baby and will give you much needed relief!

I had a natural birth with both my boys, the first was a water birth. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely do it again. I am on my third, due in August, and while the hospital I will be delivering at doesn't offer the water option, I am planning on going natural again. It is better for the baby, they tend to be more alert immediately after birth. No matter what they tell you the drugs they give you do have some effect on the baby.
