No doubt that Knopfler is an outstanding guitarist, but the best band in the world, come on , you are obviously in Dire Straits...get out there and listen to something other than them...

I've been listening to them a lot - and like "Wow!"

Songs like "Sultans of Swing", "Romeo and Juliet", "Telegraph Road", "Money For Nothing", "Your Latest Trick", etc. The list goes on.

They back up their good songs with good albums - live and studio.

It's too bad they broke up and didn't do much after 1985. They might not be the best band in the world, but they were pretty good when they were together.

You are also right about Knopfler. He's transitioned more toward a country sound in recent years, but he still can play anything!

Nope, too much of the "JJ Cale" influence in the guy's playing, for him ever to be considered one of the "greats" I'm afraid. He is still a good guitarist though.

Unfortunately they will only ever be remembered for that ONE tune- you know which one.

Sultans of Swing was great. But you could walk past the rest of the band in the street and not recognise them. So they can't possibly be the best band in the world.

You are sooooo wrong!! Go to YouTube. Check out; John Mclaughlin, John Scofield, Pat Martino, Mike Stern and 100s of other guitar players that make him look like doodoo.

I'm not really familiar with their stuff. If I had to choose best band in the world, it would be Queen, or Green Day.
