I never liked parties in my 20s - a bunch of people who really don't know each other just milling around until they are drunk enough to cause trouble is how they always seemed to turn out. Now I only go to or have parties with people I really like - that makes them small sometimes, but always very enjoyable.

I can tell you that in all my years of parties though, the ones people enjoy most are the ones where there is something to do. Game night can be fun, a tie dye party (tell people to bring their own clothes and you provide buckets of dye, rubber bands and string), even some fun craft projects (right now making snowflakes is fun and taping them to windows - works best if you pre-fold a bunch so people can get right to the cutting). How about a valentine craft night - Oriental Trading company has great kits to make your own valentine picture frames or you could just do colored paper, pinking shears, glitter, etc. and people can make the valentines they'd like to give next month. We had a candle making party once, that was so much fun, but a lot of cleanup (which wasn't too bad really, just a couple hours the next day).

The bottom line is that people are often uncomfortable socializing in big groups - and something for them to do with their hands and minds while there is nothing to say always makes for a great party.

Peace!

Just an idea, but beings it is winter time, how something cheery and bright, something like a spring time theme. One filled with soft colors, fresh flowers, flower / herb scented candles, (maybe the kind of candles that float in a bowl) light pastries, and a fresh fruit dish.

Try this...... they can dress up in anything they want, but they have all have to blow up a balloon until it explodes before entering! Otherwise, no entry. If you are an adult, try adding a little vinegar inside the balloons and stand back as they all scream in sudden, but only temperory blindness! That'll get the party started!
