Agree with piratedoll, but some do understand what they are saying- African grays, Macaws, and some larger cockatoos can reason out math problems and colors- they also can carry on conversations. I think those parrots understand what they are saying, but a bird such as a cockatiel- no way- just are imitating your words to impress you/another bird.

Parrots have an ability to imitate different sounds they hear. Parrots do not have vocal cords, they learn to control the movement of the muscles in the throat to direct the airflow in such a way as to reproduce certain tones and sounds and if living amongst humans, will copy human sounds or words.

Some parrots show signs of intelligence. Yet, it is important to understand that these mimicking birds do not really understand what they are saying. Parrots just repeat sounds that they have been taught. Talking to a parrot is basically like talking to a tape player or a Furby doll. (And even then, you never know if a parrot will talk back.) The fact is, even though some birds can be "trained" to do certain things, they cannot reason or have real, human-like conversations.

If you notice....Most mock. But having a few of my own...they are SUPER smart. They are like 2 year olds. They sometimes know what they are talking about....look at that African Gray. Also they won't talk if they are not happy.
