I don't mind paying for good protection - so I am not necessarily looking for free programs.

I for one will never use Norton.... it just slows the computer right up.... Bit defender is one of the top rated Anti-virus programs and it won't slow your computer up like Norton. You can buy it and download it right off the internet.

Currrently, the best commercial Antivirus programs are Kapersky and NOD32. The latter is incredibly fast, and both are much more efficiently written than Norton, which eats a ton of system resources and slows everything down badly. Even AVG free edition (which I currently use) performs much better for me than Norton or McAfee, which I've used in the past.

The person who said free programs aren't worthwhile just doesn't know much about PC security products- two of the best ad & spyware cleaners are free, and the only disadvantage with the free version of AVG (as opposed to the registered, paid version) is no technical support, and the ability have customized scans- the free version defaults to a complete system scan every time.

**Stay away from the free programs.
They are not as good as you think. I've try nortons, mcafee, and a few other no name AV. Everytime I head back to nortons. Currently I'm using Nortons internet Security and I have nothing bad to say about it.

P.S. - Nortons, does take up a lot of memory. So make sure you have at lest 1GIG. Which most pc's already have. A good AV like nortons requires alot of memory simply because, its working to protect your pc. A l l _ t h e_ t i m e ! It doesn't just sit there looking at you with a stupid look on its faces like a lot of AV's.

AVG for your anti virus and Zonelabs for your firewall.Make sure you uninstall norton completely using their own uninstaller (found on their website)otherwise it can leave a lot of files behind that you wont be able to shift. Its about time more people shifted away from norton as it slows your machine down considerably.

AVG and Avast are pretty good if you want a free anti virus service.
Kaspersky is the best rated, but you have to pay for it.

My nod goes to www.avast.com

It is what we recommend to our customers and we use in the office.

Avast is small...doesn't tax your computer like the big two. And it is not clunky like AVG.

Give the free home edition a try and then if you like...throw them some money.

Let us know what you decide and how it works out for you.
