Yes, it's true, but its only for the tours that the rangers give. If you go to the NPS web page, they don't shy away from telling the truth there. It boggles my mind how anybody can think that something so magnificent could have been caused by a flood! And yes, I've been there several times.

What has happened is that creationists have manged to have their belief that the Grand Canyon was created in a brief time frame displayed along with the scientific discussion of the age of the Canyon. There are creationists leading tours for those who believe that the bible is a valid report on the creation of earth, at the same time there hasn't been any viable scientific support for the creationist beliefs.

No, the flap is over an absurd book that suggests that the grand canyon was magically "created" in biblical times.

Geologists and other normal-thinking people have said that the book should not be presented by the park service.

I agree with them.

i went there on my honeymoon and found it quite amusing that some geek in a big hat thought he knew the age of the grand canyon...when you are there and see what god made..how can a mere man presuppose to know anything about it..??? sure, there might be scientific facts that prove this or that...but, if you believe there is a higher power..then you have to admit, there is a reason for the grand canyon...even if it is for us to just wonder at some other power besides our own...i think god put it there for people to look at and comtemplate the wonder of things...it could be that simple, eh..???

Hmmm...I would think they would be able to give a "scientifically estimated" age of the canyon.

That would be very weird if it were true. Of course, if they talk about age, they have to talk about dating the stratified layers, and that would get them talking about one of the taboo subjects to a creationist or "intelligent design" adherent. So maybe it is true. If so, it is very, very sad. We should not allow a minority to distort reality for the rest of us.

That is BS....part of the park rangers job is to inform visitors.

Yes , that is totally true.......

It seems that the religious fundies ( fundimentals) objected to using cronological dating because it disagreed with their beliefs of creationallism, so they ( total minorities) pressured the government to not give any info of actual age...

Rather stupid , isn't it !

Just a rumor.

That's incorrect. They usually include that information in their presentations....although some scientists disagree on the actual age....but that's another question, isn't it?
