With my first child I had back labor and it was horrible, it was really hard to tell if I was in full blown labor. I went to the hospital 7 times before I had her and was in full labor for 24 hours, before she made her appearance
With my 2nd child I also had back labor, and made 3 trips to the hospital. I was in full labor about 10 hours, before she made her appearance.
I am expecting baby #3 in May, and dread the day the labor starts.

I was in labour for five hours with my second, (first was delivered by emergency c-section) and with my third, it was four hours. Both times they were painful.
The following is from www.babycenter.com:
"What stages will I go through during labor and childbirth?
The process you'll go through during labor and childbirth can be divided into three stages:
The first stage begins with the onset of contractions and the gradual effacement (thinning out) and dilation (opening) of the cervix. That's followed by active labor, when your cervix begins to dilate more rapidly and contractions are longer, stronger, and closer together. In the last part of active labor (and the end of the first stage), called transition, your cervix dilates fully to 10 centimeters.
The second stage of labor begins once you're fully dilated and ends with the birth of your baby. This is often referred to as the pushing stage.
The third and final stage begins right after the birth of your baby and involves the separation and delivery of the placenta.
For first-time moms who are at least 37 weeks along, labor and delivery takes an average of 15 hours, although for plenty of women it lasts more than 20 hours, and for a lucky few it's over much sooner. For women who've been through labor before, deliveries average around eight hours."

My first labor lasted for 22 hours. I think I was in labor for about 12 hours before I started to count. When you start to notice that they are regular.

well if they start getting stronger and more prevailant like one after another with five minutes apart then I 'd go to the hospital and the length of labor really depends on you and how many pregnancies you have had. my first I was in active labor for 16 hours my second for 5 hours and my third I had back pian went to the er and found out she was crowning and I had no pain so go with your instincts

I was in labour for 18 hours but didn't realise. The first 15 hours were just like period pains and they weren't regular so I didn't know I was in labour. Then I had really bad pains for an hour so went to hospital and my little girl was born 2 hours later.

My first wife went five days with noticeable contractions before having our first via c-section. The second, we drove to the hospital and an hour later she had him naturally. My second wife went roughly the same on both, about 5 to 7 hours, both naturally. Hopefully, on the third, I wake up and he is lying there breastfeeding.

Technically its when you start dialating which can be weeks.
Most begin from when their water breaks. Hard labor is after 5 cm.
Its the amount of pushing to worry about. I had to push for 2 hours then had a vacuum.
Its all worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!
