My son is 11 and he is overweight. I try really hard not to mention his weight. I encouraged him to take up football and he did and for the first time ever he got to see that being a "big" boy has it's advantages! Being in football has helped his self-esteem and it has helped him to lose some weight and tone up and get fitter. I think focusing on dieting is not the right way to go. Of course you give them foods that are healthy and try to keep the junk out of the house, but it's much better to help your child find an activity or sport that will help him to get fit and feel at home in their body.

No personally I would try to gradually change their diet and take them out for more physical activity. even just walking in the evenings should be fine, 3 times a week. be careful not to put them into a situation where their weight may become a problem. just do it slowly 1 pound a week is plenty over the cousrse of 3 months with diet and exercise they should be fine. I would take him or her on walks together. Thats how I got rid of my beer belly. Its the best kind of exercise there is and its much overlooked.

My sister struggled with her weight. Once she got thin but she also got really uncharacteristically mean mean mean.

She has accepted that she is meant to be a big girl and that's just fine with her husband.

Some people are fat because of over eating and others are just supposed to be a little or a lot heavy.

Chear up Joel. I think you are swell. What do you think of that? And I don't care how fat you are.

Absolutely. Of course, you musn't be a fatty either and set a good example regarding healthy eating and physical activity. I hate it when I see fat kids because it is their parents fault for letting them get that way. It is sad because of how utterly unhealthy it is and what types of dieases and health issues (as well as emotional) it brings.

Yes, it is beneficial to encourage your child to loose weight in a healthy manner and helpful to start at an earlier age teaching them to eat right.

Absolutely.

Childhood obesity causes many long term health problems often extending into adulthood.
Also you have to consider the psychological effects. Children tend to pick on overweight children and a few years of that would destroy their self esteem

As a parent we have a duty to teach them healthy eating habits and keep them fit and healthy!

Only after I took him to the doc and made sure he was ok to lose the weight then he would be on a strict diet. With regular doc visits to watch his weight changes. :)
