how far away from a major highway should a house be bought? 1 mile? 1km? 500 feet? I'm asking both for health purposes and resale value. it seems like there's no guideline anywhere online...but maybe i'm just not looking in the right places.

Well, for comfort, I would say, "far enough that you can't hear it". I live on a hill about half a mile from I-30 and depending on conditions can hear trucks over that distance. On the other hand if there were a hill in the way, I probably could not hear the sound. If I were on the other side of a valley with the highway, it would be worse because of the trapped sound.
Most houses right on major highways were there before the highway was expanded. Most modern subdivisions use set backs and walls to defend against the noise of major streets nearby. I would want to check on second floor bedrooms on the side nearest the noise as they may be over the defenses.
As for resale value, you would be best by checking county auditor records for very similar houses within and on the edge of a subdivision.

personally as a real estate agent I find a lot of people dont like to buy near major highway. The bigest factor is the noise polution. but atleast a mile away sounds good. most ppl like to buy in neighborhoods where the house look nice and well kept.

Do not buy near a major highway, you can find the reason below from a real estate journal. Good luck to you in finding the right home for you.

I WOULD TRY TO FIND A HOUSE AS FAR AWAY FROM THE HIGHWAY, EXSPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, OR PETS. THEY COULD EASILY WONDER OFF AND GET HIT. AND THE NOISES THAT COMES WITH IT. ITS NOT REALLY QUITE. SO I WOULD LOOK SOMEWHERE AWAY FROM A BUSY HIGHWAY. GOOD LUCK.

I would never want to live near a highway. Noise pollution. Maybe you should look somewhere more peaceful.
