Give the Iraqi people and its national defense an ultimatum.
The US will always have a naval (and thus air support) presence in the region. But the majority of the ground forces need to be Iraqi- and pretty damn quick.

Set a timetable for withdrawal within the next 6 months.
Begin a new diplomatic effort, bringing in iran, Syria, and other surrounding nations who have interests. Also get with the arab league and the kurds.
Get UN funding and support, look to Russia as a possible partner.
Pull out ALL foreign contractors, especially halliburton. Replace with local iraqi contractors only.
consider an all-islamic peacekeeping force made up of a single religious sect. Pakistani and saudi troops for anbar, iranian troops for the south, and withdraw all american troops to the Kurdish areas only.
Talk to Turkey about resolving the PKK and PUK problems up north in the Kurdish region.
And kick George W. Bush and Dick Cheney out of office, both are too incompetent to lead this nation.

Well according to Bush they have been training the Iraq army for what, the pass 3yrs and the situation is still the same. In American it only takes about 9 weeks to make a marine. I propose we leave immediately and let them work out their religious differences.

Perhaps we should retreat to the borders. Isolate Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and let them all just go at it.
But seriously, in the long run Iraq will probably need to be partitioned into at least four regions. One region for Sunni, one for Shi'ia, and one for a secular republic, and one or more for anything left over.
But my specialty is physics not politics. My prayers are with those who will ultimately have to sort this out.

If we do not have the option of withdrawing all forces immediately, I too would send more troops to Iraq. Their soul purpose would be to increase our presence in hopes that it would deter enemy activity. If one should stand watch, there should be more willing souls near him to man the guns. There is strength/security for our troops in numbers!
If we did have the option, then I would say bring us home!

My plan is to avoid going to Iraq for at least another decade: it's way too screwed up at this point to be a holiday travel destination.
BTW, if I manage to get myself in over-my-head into a mess, I never expect people to bail me out. Anybody who says such things makes me wonder if they had people bailing them out their entire lives?
