If I found a wallet with a lot of money,there are few things I will do;
1. If I realize that its just fell from someones pocket then I will call the person and hand it over to him or her but will interview the person to make sure that s/he is the true owner of it.
2. If the wallet contains some identification(s) then I will hand it over to the police to look for its owner.
3 If there is no identification but just the money or cash then I will take it as a fortune "but" I will keep it for a couple of weeks or months so that if someone make an announcement of a missing wallet with a sum of money which is the same or almost the same as the one I took and if the description of the area where the person thought s/he lost it is within the area where I picked it then I will give it to the person.

First I would see if it had ID in it, then if it did, call the person. If there was no ID, maybe a credit card, then I would call the credit card company and ask that they contact the owner of the card and have them contact me. If nothing but money in the wallet, and it was a lot of money, I would call local police stations to see if anyone had reported a lost or stolen purse or wallet. Then they could call me and identify it. I would not leave it at a police station, there are people that work in those places that would just as soon help themselves to it as not. i would watch the lost and found column in the local paper also.

If their ID is in the wallet, contact the person and return it to them asap. If there's no ID, hand it in to the cops

Try to get it back to its owner. If this was not possible I would hand it into the police and get a receipt for it.
Before you ask, yes I would leave the money in it.

Take it to the police. If it hasn't been claimed or cannot be traced to anything illegal after six weeks it is returned to you. The only thing they don't return, unless its to the originazl owner is mobile phones.

Look through it to see if I could find any ID and contact info, if not, then I would hand it in to the police.
