Ugg boots are a brand name trademarked by Uggs Holdings in the USA. They're also called Ug boots or Ugh boots. Use of the different spellings such as Ughs or ugboots, goes back to the pioneer days when the boots were just plain ug-ly. The term 'ugg' is generic here in Australia. Just as 'cowboy boots' is a generic term for such footwear in America, 'ugg', 'uggs', 'ughs' and 'ugg boots' is a generic term for sheepskin footwear. As such, there are many, many manufacturers of ugg boots. Whilst this means there is lots of competition which is great, it also means you need to be a bit more discerning when purchasing a pair. The company that markets sheepskin footwear under the label 'Ugg Australia' is an American company (not Australian) based out of California. You cannot purchase Ugg Australia's boots in physical retail shops in Australia. As their annual report says, the majority of their footwear is made in China.
