It could be failure to thrive.
Is she nursing? Maybe her milk is not enough for the baby. Maybe the baby needs a preemie milk that has extra calories per ounce. My prayers go out to the baby. I hope he is okay!

As some other posters said, babys do lose weight, it's a natural thing. Although a hospital stay sounds scary, the doctors will just want to monitor him for a few days and if neccessary suppliment what he's eating w/ high calorie/vitamin formulas to make sure he's doing all right. My infant lost 10 oz. in 2 days and I had to supply extra formula instead of solely breastfeeding. They will also run some tests to check the baby's metabolism as this is sometimes why they lose a lot of weight, especially preemies. But my friend had a baby early who weighed only 3 lbs some odd ounces for like 2 1/2 months and by the time he was a year old he weighed 35 lbs. Hope everything works out okay!

See if she can talk to her doctor about boosting her breast milk with formula,i had to do that with my son,he was not a preemie but he had a heart defect and has had 2 surgerys and was not gaining weight, they had me pump my milk and add one tsp on formula with 100 mls of my milk.It does work, but be sure to ask her doctor before she does anything, her little one may be lactose intolerant or have other allergys to food she is eating and going into her milk. How much does the baby take in a feeding?Good luck.

Preemies have a very hard time with weight. I had a micro preemie who was 4 months early. Now at 2 years old she is still only 24 pounds. she is skinny and I cant get her to gain. Also try enfamil formula, sometime it will help. hope it gets better wish you the best of luck

I wonder where the milk is going... is he spitting a lot of it up? I know an infant who needed surgery because he spit up excessively but is now doing fine. Does the infant have diareah? If he acting alert and healthy and happy and isn't spitting up or having diareah I am sure the child is fine and is maybe just using the food to finish growing internally. definitely something that needs to be checked out and tested to make sure.

That is normal at first. My daughter did the same thing. The doctor said it was because she had gotten rid of all the fluids from being in the womb. Within in a couple weeks, she started gaining weight again.

I really have no idea, he could have an issue with the bacteria in his intestines that's not allowing his body to absorbe nutrition properly... he could have an obstruction some place... he could be allergic to what he's being fed... It could be a billion things. I'm so sorry for your friend, it's got to be scary.

This is so sad and I have no answer for you, it's never nice to see a parent worrying about their children.

Your friend should try to have faith that the doctors will do what is best for the baby.

Check to see if he is "tongue tied". My friend's son seemed fine, nursed all the time, but wasn't gaining much weight. They finally figured out he wasn't able to suck properly because of his tongue so he wasn't eating enough.
Just a suggestion.......best of luck.
