I would thank them for it, but wouldn't really feel that way, but it's the thought that counts.

Say thank you and take it of course, unless its an item of clothing where yo can make the excuse that it doesn't fit right so a refund is needed, its rude to say you don't like a present to the persons face who gave it to you, the odds are that your tastes will be abit different to the person who gave you the gift in the first place, but its very iggorant just to say you don't like it when someone has forked out money on a gift genuinely thinking you will appreciate the gift they got you, if someone said to me "this is rubbish" etc i'd slap them, people should be more courteous when receiving gifts and should be grateful they got anything at all, I've had it in the past where i've forked out for friends as a nice gesture and they just grunt and don't look very appreciative, I gave one a good telling off once as she wanted me to buy her something really expensive she pointed out what she wanted in a shop (I hadn't known her that long either so it seemed rather cheeky), instead I bought her a lovely paperweight (she collects items such as these) and just cos she didn't get her own way when I asked her if she liked it she just said well....my sister says it looks like brains (which was a weird thing to say, it was nice anyway and not exactly cheap) spoilt brat, once she realised I wasn't putting up with that tosh, she has avoided me, big baby, and I haven't seen her since, good riddance! These days I don't bother buying gifts for so-called friends just my close family members/relatives, as most apparent mates don't appreciate it anyway regardless if the item is hideous or not!

Thank them. If it was something another friend would like, I'd ask if they wanted it and I'd give it to them. If they didn't want it I'd put it on ebay (if it would sell), and if wasn't worth doing either of those then I'd give it to a charity shop. I would never put it in the bin.

accept with good grace and put it in the back of the cupboard or give it to charity. One of my relatives gives me a bottle of brandy every Christmas and I never drink spirits - I've got litres of the stuff in my cupboard!
