There is an acronym we use. It is called R I C E. It stands for rest, ice, compression, elevation. If you have a sprain, do these things. Also, take Ibuprofen. Make sure you eat before you take it though, because it can upset your stomach.

Drinking plenty of water, mininmizing salt intake, elevating your feet, and icing the swelling are ways to TREAT ankle swelling, not preventing it. If you want to prevent it, then find out the cause. Socks too tight? Sitting for long periods of time? Sitting incorrectly at the computer? Bad shoes with poor support? A heart/circulation condition?

Ankles shouldn't swell in a healthy person who gets enough sleep and exercise, and who has a healthy diet. If you do those things, and your ankles still swell, find the source of the swelling, treat it, and then you will have prevented it from happening.

What's causing the swelling? Do you have heart prblems? Have you had an injury?

It's best to elevate your legs 3-4 times a day. Sit in a lounge chair, or put your feet up on another chair, being careful not to cut off the circulation at your groin. You can also lay down in bed or on a couch or floor a few times a day, with your feet propped up.

Cut down on the salt in your diet. Don't add salt, and don't eat lots of canned or frozen meals unless they are lower salt versions. Drink plenty of water to help eliminate extra salt.

When sitting in a chair, don't cross your legs at your knees. That cuts down the circulation to your lower legs and causes the blood to pool there. Stretch your legs and work your muscles if you have a sedentary job, by placing your feet flat on the floor and moving the fronts of your feet up and down to stretch the calf muscles. Do that every hour. Get up and walk around if your job consists of sitting in a chair for long periods of time. You may need to wear support hose if the swelling occurs on a daily basis.

If your ankles are swelling so you have an indentation in the skin after pressing your finger into the swollen area (pitting edema), get a check-up to make sure you don't have a health problem.

If your ankle is swelling due to an injury, elevate your leg a few times a day as stated above. Apply ice if the injury is a recent one. Wear a support stocking if you have to be on your feet for long periods (TED hose can be purchased at a pharmacy or medical supply store).

Keep your feet raised either on a footstool or coffee table. When in bed, put a couple of pillows under your feet to keep them raised. Keep off your feet as much as possible. Placing a bag of frozen vegetables on your ankles will also help with the swelling.
