Godparents don't have to be there in order to be godparents. You don't have to have a stand-in, just make sure they're mentioned on the certificate. There does have to be at least one witness, but if you do it in front of church, it'll be fine.

Yes - some years ago I had a "proxy" Godparent standing in for the Godmother of my daughter, as we were living in Germany at the time and she could not make it. Cant remember how it was arranged, but dont remember any problems!

Yes it happens all the time. You should Honor your proxy as well as the actual Godparent.

Yes. We just had our 2 children baptised and their 2 different sets of godparents could not make it.

yes i nearly had to do it as my brother was away in the army but the christening got postponed so he was able to be there. you have to get someone to stand in for them, in my case my dad was going to do it.
