there must be a good reason for this but what is it?

Apparently it is deliberate. See this review on Amazon in which it says 'Chris points out to the proprietor that "happiness" is spelled incorrectly. She notes that it doesn't matter how the word is written--just that the kids have it.)

It is spelled that way because it is the message in the movie. When Chris goes to drop his son off at school there is grafiti on a nearby mural (it says f**k). When Chris is upset he scolded the janitor person for not cleaning it. Then he scolds for happiness being spelled with a y in the middle. Later he is fussing about it. I'm not EXACTLY sure what the message is so don't quote me. I think it is that there are other things to worry about. (though it's probably not that)

There's an important scene in the movie where "happiness" is spelled "happyness". Just watch the movie. You'll see why.

The daycare that Chris Gardner's (played by Will Smith) son was going to spelled it this way. Chris Gardner spoke with the owners of the daycare about it, but they did not change it. You must see the movie to see what I am talking about.

The reason for the misspelling is because his son goes to a school where it has the name misspelled, which the father (will smith) has argued many times to get it fixed.
