Get a domain name through places like GoDaddy, then get a 'shared hosting plan', also from places like GoDaddy. You will need an HTML development program (lots out there from free to $1000), then 'publish' your pages to your host.

If you want a free social page, places like MySpace are available.

This is totally up to you and the purpose of your site.

Since you apparently have a Yahoo account, you can set up one at Geocities. http://geocities.yahoo.com/gcp/ Some Internet providers offer a web space. Some Internet providers have partnered with Yahoo, and they offer another web page service. Like Verizon is my provider. Verizon has partnered with Yahoo, so I get everything both Yahoo and Verizon offers. I have a space I got from Verizon, and I have a space at Yahoo's Geocities. Some of the ones mentioned by others may be okay, but just be careful. You don't know how secure they are. Also, since some of the others are free, you may be limited in what you can do and how big you want your site. Mine that I got through Verizon, I have about 5 or 6 pages on my site, several pictures, AND even some music. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for.

I am using a company called Sitesell. This is the very first time I have built a website, so I needed a company who could take me by the hand, step by step!

I have nothing but praise for them! They make EVERYTHING so easy! They supply all of the online training, simple (yet incredibly sophisticated tools) and excellent support.

The cost is just $299. That includes all of the above plus domain registration. They even supply the templates for designing your site! And don't worry about html coding or other techy stuff as that's all taken care of for you!

My site is only 9 months old. It is already very highly ranked by the major search engines and is attracting up to 1000 hits a day! Plus it makes money which not only covers the costs, but actually shows a decent profit!

You can get more info from my information page at:

Please feel free to contact me through my site if you would like anymore info or advice.

Best wishes

www.cheap-domainnames.com is the best price if you are to purchase your own domain name. $7.85 per .com domain. I know this place is legit, as I have purchased several domains from them recently and my sites are live.

The thing is, you now need to find a host. Someone that is affordable, yet flexible. Here is a list of hosts, that will allow you to maintain your website: http://www.top-10-web-hosting.com/ (I don't know much on these host sites as I host my own, so it's best to read up on them and do comparison shopping)

I personally have a web server, database server, domain controller, backup server, print server, and a file server in my home so it is simple to maintain. This isn't typically feasible for most people, as it takes a minimum of a few grand to setup and protect. (Firewalls)

If you don't care to much about your site, you can use free junk sites link www.myspace.com. This seems to be the winner amongst most people who don't have the means to host their own site. My personal opinion on myspace.com is that it's a junk site and I would only go with the best when it comes to my family.

If you have any other questions, you can always IM me and I would be happy to answer any of them for you.

Take care and good luck on you venture.

As you're starting out then use one of the sites that let you use templates. That's all we need for putting something on the net. Next you can go on to learn html and all but template web-pages are fine to start.

You can go to myspace or xanga and just have a profile or you could go to http://www.freewebs.com and set up a multiple page website with guestbook and blog and stuff. Its free unless you get the premium one.
