Yes, you can get online free with the wi-fi. What happens is that when people make wireless networks in their homes and businesses the radio waves are transmitted throughout the air.
When people don't secure their connections, this allows other people to "piggy back" or "leech" off their wireless connection as if your computer was one of the ones on the wireless network.

Some businesses allow wireless connections as do some schools and libraries. If you "piggy-back" off someone's wireless and their ISP finds out, which they can by simply driving a vehicle through the neighborhood and using a scanning device, you may be charged by the ISP for theft of services.

You may be even charged with unlawful entry into someone's computer (hacking).

If you have a laptop with a wireless card then you can go into some shopping centres, hotels or airports, etc and use the Internet for free.

You'll need to find somewhere where there is a wireless hotspot, this is a small area where you can sit and your laptop will pick up a wireless network connection.

Actually, it isn't actually free - you'll no doubt be sitting somewhere where you have to pay for a product or service, so you'll probably have to buy a few drinks in a cafe, for example, in order to use their wifi hotspot.

A wireless router is a device that you can use in your own home to access the Internet wirelessly. You'll need an Internet connection which costs money - plus a laptop or PC that has a wireless capability.

Try Wifinder to find hotspots in your local area.

A lot of people who have wireless routers at home dont know enough (or dont care) to turn on encryption (security that scrambles the data). So if you live near one of these people, you can simply connect to their wireless network and get on the internet. If you take your laptop and drive slowly down the street, you will find some. This is called 'war driving'.

Also, places like starbucks offer it for free so you will buy a $5 cup of coffee. Just go there, and connect!

If you are at a wi-fi hot spot, you can get on free provided you can connect there. If you are talking about at home, you gotta have an internet service, otherwise, no internet.
